Mallocakes!

A friend today suggested that I print a recipe for the Mallocakes we all know and love.

Unfortch, I don’t actually have a recipe. 🙂 Here’s what we do know about Mallocakes from HARD BITTEN:

But that didn’t make my fourth Mallocake–a processed and hydrogenated log of chocolate sponge cake filled with marshmallow cream so sugary it left your teeth gritty–and less delicious than the third had been.

Mallory had discovered Mallocakes one night at a convenience store in Bucktown.  There were only a few stores in Chicago that sold them, which made her burgeoning love for the things–sparked in part because of the similarities in their names–that much more inconvenient.  Mallocakes were made by a mom-and-pop bakery in Indiana that shipped them out only once a month, which made them harder to find . . .

They were ridiculously good.

The chocolate sponge cake was just the right balance of tangy chocolate and not-too-sweet cake, which matched up perfectly against a cream filling that reeked of sugar.  There were a few hundred calories in a single dose, and each box boasted half a dozen cellophane-wrapped cakes . . .

I have imagined Mallocakes as a kind of chocolate Twinkie. So I suppose you could start with a Homemade Twinkies recipe and adjust for chocolate, or start with a Homemade Ding-Dong recipe and adjust for shape.

As soon as I have time to experiment (HA!), I’ll get into the kitchen and see what I can come up with. 🙂

  • Just a warning, the devils food cake part must be fairly moist in order to accept a roll. Also, for an adult treat and to add moistness, add a spritzer of rum to the cake before you roll! UM!

  • The way you described them in the book, I thought they were real. I was trying to figure out a way to have them shipped to me here in CA….. I had pictured some kind of log roll sponge cake with the white creamyness oozing out…. I guess I will have to try to make some… I do like LPCoders additive of rum…… YUUUMMMMM!!!

  • Mallocakes actually exist just under a different name. They’re not here in the mid-west but during a road trip that took me and my friends through the south, stuff like that was in EVERY gas station. No joke. I can’t remember what they were called for the life of me though.

  • I think Whoopie Pies could be a close alternative. You can make them at home and if you have ever been to Amish Country (Shipshewana, IN) they are everywhere.

  • Mallocakes remind me of somthing my grandma used to buy us when we was kids… I think they are called Moon Pies???

    • Mischelle, you pegged it… Cant believe I didnt think of SwissCakes… They are amazing! 🙂
