I’ll be guest-blogging at The Knight Agency on Tuesday to chat about some “spooktacular,” classic Halloween reads. Each day this week, I’m going to feature one of them.
Today’s features is a gothic classic, Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven. Wikipedia reports that The Raven was first published on January 29, 1845. It remains one of my haunting favorites.
. . . Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!’
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!’
Merely this and nothing more. . . .

Never read this one,but I know it is legendary.
The Raven is one of my personal favorites, too! I loved it when the Simpsons did a visual on this one for a Halloween episode. Hop Frog is a good one, too!!
I loved Poe when I was a teen, but it was too early for the Goth style. I think I would have made a good one. *snicker* Now MY teen loves Poe. It's amazing how we still get shivers reading his writing, isn't it?
You should try Poe on audio! I ordered just in time for Halloween and I'm enjoying the narration by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone.
BTW, I have enjoyed reading Merit and LOVE the new art for Twice Bitten!
